Help!! I'm Moving With Children

Ladies, I need all the advice you can give me on moving with children. How do I pack, when they want to "help"? How do I ease the transition? Ideas for fun car games would be appreciated too. Please leave your advice in the comments.

  1. There are some things that are perfectly fine for the kids to help pack- toys even the clothes from the dresser, I would think as long as it is not breakable why not let them. It will give them something to do while you pack along side, then when it comes to the things you don't want help with, a good play date will be the best solution.
I would also share that when it comes to setting up the new house, don't worry if it gets done all at once, (these things take time) but before long you will be able to call your new house a home!

  2. When we moved to Omaha I got some great advice from my mom. We set up the boys bedrooms first. We made a huge deal about their new beds in their new rooms and made sure that some of their stuff that they were used to was there. Let Jane help and make a huge deal about it being her room. That way she will start out in your new house in her new room. If she has to start out sleeping in a different room you will just have to make her change again. Let her help you put some of her stuff away in her new room. She will love it. :)

  3. For the drive to your next destination, here's a couple little ideas... You could buy a new toy for each of them and maybe even wrap it. When you start the drive pull it out and make a big deal about their new toy. Jayci loved listening to Disney music on our last trip- maybe make a CD of Disney songs that you know Jane loves. Also, you could play "I spy" and have her look for things out her window.

  5. As far as packing goes, I left it until the last week when James could help. I thought it was more important to go to the zoo and the gardens, and then cram it all in. The last week, I'd get up each morning around 4, and get a few hours in before the children woke up. It was very theraputic to have quiet time to pack up my belongings and have time to remember all of the good times w/out the stress of little bodies trying to help pack up stuff.
